BioSc172L is a lab course where students learn how basic biology concepts are applied directly to a scientific investigation of how best to produce biofuels using algae. We use photobioreactors, microbiology, microscopes, spectrophotometers, the chemistry and math of preparing solutions, and a CO2 meter to carry out experiments that measure growth, metabolism, and biomolecule production. This course will teach students about all aspects of the biotechnology field, with content appropriate for a wide range of students and professionals. Along with the lecture course, BioSc172, satisfies the IGETC Area V, CSU B3, and meets the pre-requisite to BIOSC134 and BIOSC119.
